The Accounting Associate of Applied Science degree is designed to prepare students to fulfill many types of entry-level positions found in the field of accounting.  Many students who graduate with this type of degree go on to work for accounting firms, businesses, governmental or not-for-profit organizations.  Accounting associates’ responsibilities may involve providing assistance to top level accountants and auditors by performing accounting, administrative and bookkeeping duties.  Other functions could include compiling data required for management and governmental reports and processing customer invoices using various accounting software systems.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded for successful completion of 60 credit hours as outlined. Students desiring a less comprehensive program should consider the accounting certificate program also listed below.

Accounting Certificate: Because an associate degree can typically take at least two years to complete, this certificate provides workforce training in accounting in a shorter period of time with fewer general education core courses.

Contact the counselor or faculty advisor at any college for specific information on the AAS and Accounting Certificate and to obtain the recommended sequencing of courses. The general education core courses and several individual accounting courses may transfer to a variety of universities.

By completing the program, students will earn two awards:
  1. Accounting, Level 1 Certificate
  2. Accounting, AAS

The Accounting Associate of Applied Science degree is designed to prepare students for occupations in the accounting profession. Job responsibilities depend on the area of specialization: public accounting, managerial accounting, corporate accounting, or governmental and nonprofit accounting. Accountants help individuals and businesses manage their money by setting up and maintaining accounting systems, preparing budgets, studying company operations, performing audits, and preparing government forms. They help management plan and control company activities.

Accounting graduates have a wide variety of job opportunities available to them in industry, in governmental agencies, or in the public accounting sector. Beginning accountants usually start as ledger accountants, internal auditors, or as trainees for technical accounting positions.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded for successful completion of 60 credit hours as outlined.
