The ability to communicate is one of the most highly sought skills by employers. In fact, the 2018 Job Outlook survey by NACE demonstrates that-beyond GPA-employers want mostly students who feature communication training on their resume with an emphasis on problem solving and the ability to work in a team. This survey found that the knowledge and skills taught in Communication courses are essential to being hired. At its foundation, Communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.
The knowledge, understanding, and skills that a student acquires through a program of study in Communication will help him or her become a valued asset in a variety of contexts-from organizations to politics, from families to multinational corporations. Communication graduates also appreciate how communication cuts across contexts and situations; it is the relational and collaborative force that constructs the social world. A degree in Communication opens the door to a wide variety of employment opportunities. Communication graduates find jobs in the private, government, and non-profit sectors.

Field of Study Curricula
A Field of Study (FOS) is a selection of lower-division courses that are guaranteed by state law to transfer and apply to a degree program. If a student takes all the courses in a FOS and then transfers to another Texas public institution of higher education, the FOS is guaranteed to transfer as a block and be applied to the appropriate major. If a student has completed the FOS, the Texas common core curriculum, and any university or college courses required of all students regardless of major, then the student is finished with all the lower-division courses for the degree program at any Texas public institution. If a student transfers with an incomplete FOS, then each completed FOS course is guaranteed to transfer and apply to the degree program, although the institution may require additional lower-division courses.
