MUSC 1191 - Professional Development for Musicians

This course will assist students in developing the critical skills required to be successful musicians in the professional world. Students will learn how to write professional résumés, CVs, cover letters, and bios; effective audition, rehearsal, and performance technique; and the basics of music law and music business.
Prerequisite: Departmental approval; audition required
Student Learning Outcomes
1 - Write a properly formatted and effectively written résumé and/or CV, cover letter for application to further collegiate or post-collegiate study, and bio. 2 - Select audition material that is appropriate to one’s skill level and is demonstrative of one’s strengths as a musician within a short excerpt. 3 - Demonstrate effective audition technique, including preparing memorized material, dressing appropriately, clearly articulating one’s needs to an accompanist, and behaving professionally in front of the adjudicators. 4 - Demonstrate the ability to rehearse a short piece effectively to a performance-ready standard, with clear and collegial communication of musical choices and goals with fellow musicians. 5 - Demonstrate a mastery of performance technique, including dressing appropriately, performing a short work with colleagues, bowing, and receiving and responding to audience and peer feedback. 6 - Demonstrate a basic understanding of copyright law, including collaboration agreements, works for hire, joint works, fair use, how a work is copyrighted, and what rights are retained by a copyright claimant. 7 - Demonstrate a working knowledge of the various components of the music industry, including performance rights organizations, musicians’ unions, music publishers, and the recording industry.
