SOCI 2340 - Alcohol and Drug Use

This course examines the sociology of drug use and abuse in modern society. This course examines individual and societal level consequences for medical, non-medical, licit and illicit use of alcohol and other drugs. Controversial subjects such as the “War on Drugs,” legalization, and decriminalization are explored as well as patterns of use and their effects on society. CIP Code: (4511015525)

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the factors defining a drug in the context of society and social reaction. 2. Identify the factors defining addiction and abuse in the context of society and social reaction. 3. Explore the meaning of drug and drug use in the cultural context, identifying the perception of drug use across various cultural groups. 4. Identify social solutions to drug use and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to both groups and individuals. 5. Debate the use of specific drugs from a cultural and societal perspective.
