Associate of Arts in Teaching


[AAT_EC6G degree offered at LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery, LSC-North Harris, LSC-Tomball, and LSC-University Park]

This Associate of Arts in Teaching degree is for students interested in acquiring knowledge and skills in the field of education. Courses within the program align with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Standards. The degree plan satisfies the core requirements for baccalaureate programs at four-year institutions that lead to initial Texas teacher certification.

Field experiences are an integral part of becoming a professional teacher. Courses that are field-based require outside classroom time for observation and experiential learning in Texas Education Agency (TEA) accredited schools.

Note: The Associate of Arts in Teaching, AAT will meet Generalist, Bilingual and ESL certifications for both EC-6 and 4-8.  The courses required for the AAT meet the lower-division requirements for these certifications.  When there are options given for a core requirement or elective in the AAT, please check transfer institution degree requirements to ensure which course is applicable as it may be different depending on transfer institution.

1 MATH 1314  is a prerequisite or placement by testing, for MATH 1350  and MATH 1351 . See an advisor to determine additional or other math courses required for transfer credit to specific 4-year institutions.

Students must also complete a total of 32 hours of observation to meet state field experience requirements in EDUC 1301  (16 hours) and EDUC 2301  (16 hours). Successful completion of a background check is required to observe in EC-12 school campuses. Individual school districts and/or school campuses will conduct background checks for LSC students before being approved to observe at the schools.

Choose from the Life & Physical Sciences  in the Core Requirements for the AA Associate of Arts .  The following courses are recommended for transfer to a university:BIOL 1406  OR BIOL 1408 CHEM 1405 GEOL 1403 , or PHYS 1410 .  Verify requirements at transfer institution to ensure course is applicable to desired degree.

4 Choose from the Creative Arts  in the Core Requirements for the AA Associate of Arts .  The following courses are recommended for transfer to a university: ARTS 1301 ARTS 1303 ARTS 1304 DRAM 1310 , or MUSI 1306 . Verify requirements at transfer institution to ensure course is applicable to desired degree.

5 Choose from the Social/Behavioral Sciences   in the Core Requirements for the AA Associate of Arts .  The following courses are recommended for transfer to a university: PSYC 2301 ; GEOG 1303 , or ECON 2301 . Verify requirements at transfer institution to ensure course is applicable to desired degree.

6  Choose from the Language, Philosophy, & Culture  in the Core Requirements for the AA Associate of Arts . The following courses are recommended for transfer to a university: ENGL 2327 ENGL 2328 ENGL 2332 ENGL 2333  or ENGL 2341  (with a theme of children’s literature preferred). Verify requirements at transfer institution to ensure course is applicable to desired degree.
